A1: Digital Learning Systems
Explore the Learning Target
A1 Tutorial Tools & Resouces
A1 Lingos (Create Slides for each Lingo)
Digital Notebook
A learning resource that functions much like a regular classroom textbook, but is kept digitally online and/or on your computer. We will use Google Slides to keep a digital notebook for this class.
Learning Targets
These are things we are going to learn about in TechEd class. They are listed on the left of the screen.
iCans
An iCan is a statement that describes and summarizes the learning targets for our class. We create iCan statements by reflecting on our learning and putting the learned concepts into words. iCan statements can also be referred to as learning targets.
Lingos
Lingo is a trendy term for a vocabulary word. In order to explain concepts and ideas in any academic area, like Technology for example, you have to know the Lingo and what it means.
Visual Content
Images, concept maps, graphs & charts, tables, and other forms of content that accompany iCan slides which help us remember important information about that TechEd learning target. We will usually refer to these as visuals in class for short.
Collaboration
Work with another person or group to learn from one another, complete a task, and reach a common goal.
Digital Learning Systems
These are websites like Edmodo and our Google Student Account that are built specifically for organizing what and how we learn digitally. Features that we will use from these sites include: collaboration and communication with students and teachers, posting and turning in of assignments, quizzes and surveys, sharing of learning resources and content for class, class calendar, and other features.
Digital Publishing
A general term for any type of file or digital production that you can create from productivity software. For the purpose of this class, we will include word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows/presentations, and webpages in the classification of digital publishing.
Slide Animations
Special media effects that can be used to present different parts of a slide in a slideshow. These effects can help you highlight and emphasize a certain part of the slide, making the information really stand out.
Template
In the case of digital publishing, it is the idea of creating a master slide or page that you can use over and over again to quickly set up different information in similar way so it is easier to use. We will use this quite a bit with slides.

- What are the two ways you can paste something on your Mac workstation?
- How many Targets will we have in each Module?
- Name a web based application that we will use in class that are examples of Digital Learning Systems.
- What is another name for lingos?
- Name 5 things that a Digital Learning System allows you to do for class.
- Understand how to turn in an assignment to Google Classroom from your Google Student Account (GSA).
- Name 3 digital publishing applications that are part of your Google Student Account.
- What are 3 ways that assignments/classwork can be turned in through digital learning systems like Google Classroom?
- Name at least 3 of the apps that are part of G-Suite in your Google Student Account.
A1 Lingo Visual Content
Match the following visuals to the lingo that you think they might go with. Take the image and place it on the A1 Lingo slide that it goes with.
A1 Performance Task Part 1 - Digital Notebook
Lets see if we successfully created our Digital Notebook with all of our A1 slides completed. Please check to make sure you have completed the iCan, Lingos, and FSQ (Focus Skills & Questions) slides for A1, answered all questions, and included all visuals.
A1 Performance Task Pt 2 - Collaboration
Traits of Effective Collaboration Activity
- Organize into teams by the row in which you sit in the classroom.
- Designate the student sitting closest to the door in your row as the group facilitator.
- Designate the student sitting closest to the wall at the group communicator.
- Decide as a group how you will communicate on your activity once you start. There will be no verbal communication allowed. Mr. Heyboer will have a quick tutorial on using Today's Meet if you wish to use that.
- Set up your group communication (communicator needs to do that) and also share a G-Suite App (Docs, Slides, or Sheets, done by the facilitator).
- As a group, generate an ABC list of terms or phrases you think of that are important to effective collaboration in a learning group. There is an example below of what that might look like, feel free to use the examples given. Remember that you can come up with more than one word/phrase for each letter.
- After each word/phrase that each team member comes up with, put your initials in parenthesis after it, smaller letters. See Example.
- Each Team Member should come up with at least 4 ideas for different letters, hopefully more!
A1 Check for Understanding Assessment
Please take the A1 Quiz in Google Classroom. Remember, you need to score a 70% or better to show proficiency for this Learning Target.

A1 LEVEL 4 - COLLABORATION PRACTICE:
- Take a few moments to view Tutorial #6 in the Tutorial Tools & Resources section of A1.
- Group up with classmates (no more than 4 total in a group) and practice sharing Google G-Suite files with each other (can be Docs, Sheets, or Slides). Everyone should share a file with the group so they can practice.
- Choose one of the files to use as a group to compile a list of all 50 states in the United States alphabetically from memory ONLY. Can you remember them all?
- Mr. Heyboer will come around and check in on who is in your group and who is contributing.
Gmail
This is the email service for your Google Account. Email currently is the most popular mode of digital communication world wide, and Gmail is a very effective email service.
Google Groups
This application allows Google account users the ability to start newsgroups and discussion forums online with other users. It is a great way to share ideas and collaborate on a given topic.
Google +
Many Google accounts have access to Google Plus, a social networking service similar to Facebook. Many Google users use Google Plus to collaborate with people they are already connected to in other Google Apps.
