What is a Server?
Part 1
TGIn this set of activities, we are going to explore the role of servers in computer networks, including the world largest network which is the Internet. Remember that the role of a server in a digital device network is to information, or data, to clients and sometimes other servers. Also, it is important to remember the role of client digital devices, which access and use the data from server computers on a digital network.
As we learn more about servers and how they work, it is important to understand that there are different types of servers that are part of the "Blue Nowhere", or cyberspace. Take a look at the video below. Folllow the steps below to start your exploration into networks by understanding what a server is and does.

Take a look at the video below. Folllow the steps below to start your exploration into networks by understanding what a server is and does.
- Start a new Google Slides file with a title slide of "Understanding Networks"
- For the next slide, simply Type the term "Servers"
- Now watch the video/slideshow and identify the different types of servers in the video. Create a slide for each type of server. You will want to pause the video to record the information you need. There are more types out there, but this good starting point.
- While the video/slideshow does a great job identifying the different types of servers, the definitions are a little long and hard to understand. Develop a description in your own words for each type of server featured in the video. Record your description on each server slide. I suggest you do a little Google Searching yourself on each of the types of servers here to help you with your definition.
Part 2
But wait, there is more! Check out these types of servers, and add them to your slideshow/list:
- Gaming Server
- Mail (Email) Server
- Catalog Server
- Computing Server
- Database Server
- Print Server
- News Server
Part 3
Okay, now lets think about how companies might use these servers for what they do. Take a look at the 10 different websites below. Discuss with a partner all the services that these companies/websites provide to their users/customers. Be sure to understand that most, if not all, provide multiple services, not just one.
After discussing each website, take a few minutes to review your list of servers in your slideshow. Which servers does each website need to provide the services it does to its users? Copy and paste the logo of each company on the server slides that it needs to use. For example, Edmodo would need cloud server that allows users to save files online, video servers for video playback, application servers for the apps they provide, catalog servers for keeping track of accounts, etc. So, you would need to put the Edmodo logo on each of these slides.
Part 4: Reporting Results of Server Matching Survey
- Step 1: Decide on the best way to organize your data. Remember, you are working with the amount of people that chose each type of server for the company assigned to you. Should you use a table or graph? If a graph, what kind of graph? How should the data be organized in your graph? Can you use a productivity tool to organize your data, or will you do it by hand?
- Step 2: Construct your idea for reporting the results of the Server Matching Survey for your company. You may construct it using a Google App, or by making it by hand. The creation needs to fit on an normal size sheet of paper (8.5x11).
- Share your creation with Mr. Heyboer. Make sure all the group members names are on it, as well as a title and the company you were assigned.
Grading Rubric for Reporting Results of Server Matching Survey
1 Pt. - All names of group members at the very bottom right hand corner of page
2 Pt. - Title of Project including name of company. Ex: "Server Matching Results for Edmodo".
3 Pt. - Table or Graph Organized effectively & Neatly with proper Labeling & Headings
4 Pt. - All data is accurate and represents the entire list of respondents information.
