Bridge Building Activity
Part 1
Lets start with a little fun. Try the different bridge building games/simulations linked below to get your mind thinking about bridges!
Part 2
Now lets take a look at bridges and bridge building in real life. The two videos below are excellent at explaining how bridge building and design has changed over the centuries. Each video has a short quiz in Edmodo that you need to take. Make sure you click on the quiz that matches the video so the questions match. The questions in the quiz will be in order as they appear in the videos. As you watch the videos, think about the factors that have affected and changed the way bridges are designed and built today.
Notice that for each video their are options for viewing it. Be aware that if you try to view the video in Chrome, you may have to click on the Adobe Flash Video message that may show at the top of the screen. I would also refresh after you update, and you may have to update it again. You can also download the file and then play it. When you click on the downloaded file, it should open in Quicktime Player on your Mac workstations, and I believe it will also play on your Chromebooks. Finally there is a button to watch/download it in Google Drive.

Part 3: Bridge Building Challenge!
Now that we have done some research and thinking about bridge design, lets put this into practice! Take a look at at our problem/challenge below:
Scoring Rubric:
-Level 1 Points: video quizzes
-Level 2 Points: EDP rough draft and final digital copy
-Level 3 Points: Bridge construction, evaluation on design, craftsmanship
-Level 4 Points: Bridge performance, weight held divided by weight of bridge
- Design a tooth bridge that holds as much weight as possible.
- Weight will be tested by using a load device that will require the road bed to be at least 5.5 cm wide and have a clearance of 8 cm.
- Bridge needs to reach across a opening of 21 cm, and the “road bed” needs to be at least 5 cm off the plane of the opening.
- Glue may only be applied at non-parralel contact points where toothpicks intersect.
- Bridges must have an opening in the middle for the testing equipment.
- The You will have 8 days to construct the bridge.
