Part 3: Comparing Webmail Providers Activity
As we all should know by now, our Google Student Accounts include a school email address that we can access on the web through our web browser. This type of email account we commonly refer to as webmail. For this activity, we are going to compare our Google Student Account webmail service to another webmail service that has been around for a long time, AOL. I will provide you with access to my AOL account (please only look, do NOT add any content to it). We will be constructing a Venn Diagram comparing the features for each webmail service. Follow the steps below:
- Open up your GSA webmail account in your workstation web browser. Go to gmail.com and key in your GSA username and password.
- In a separate window or screen, go to aol.com. Find the "sign in" feature at the top. Key in the following info: Username - cheyboer75, Password - Kenowa99.
- Look over each of the webmail main screens. Use only the main screens as a comparison of each other.
- Identify at least 10 features of these webmail services in the combined windows. The feature does not have to be in both webmails.
- Construct a Venn Diagram on a slide in your Understanding Email slideshow in Google Slides. The video below will demonstrate. Remember that you need two overlapping circles, one labeled "GSA Gmail" and the other "AOL Mail". Where the circles overlap is where the features they have in common go. In the separate parts of the circles is where the features only that webmail service has is identified.

Part 4: Using an Email Client App
Now we are going to take a look at how we can access email accounts without the use of a web browser. There are a few different options for using our email accounts through programs on our digital devices. We call these programs email clients. The tutorial below introduces us to Apples email client which they simply call Apple Mail. Apple has versions of this software for Mac OSX on their computers as well as on mobile devices through iOS. This tutorial will walk you through using Apple Mail on your workstation. Feel free to use your own personal email address in this example along with your school email address. Or, you can use the AOL example account from Part 3. Be sure to set up multiple email accounts in your example as this is one of the strengths of using an email client app.
When you are finished, take a screenshot of your open Apple Mail window. Be sure your screenshot includes two or more email accounts showing on the left mailboxes pane of the window. Save your screenshot to your Google Drive account for use later.
